Wednesday late morning 4/30

Quakemap An earthquake in northern California last night at 5.2 was the same intensity as the one in Illinois a couple of weeks ago. Residents near the Shasta-Trinity National Forest got a strong jolt Tuesday night when a magnitude 5.2 earthquake hit the mountainous area. There were no immediate reports or injury or damage. The temblor struck at 8:03 p.m., centered about 11 miles southeast of the town of Willow Creek and 330 miles north of San Francisco. Seismologists said the quake originated about 11 miles below the surface on an unmapped fault. No tsunami warning was issued. The quake was widely felt within about an 80-mile radius, as far north as the Oregon state line. Quakes in California are not felt as far away as the ones in our part of the country. The Illinois quake was felt 500 miles away.

Temp 33 the low at my house this morning with a touch of frost. I live in a valley and our plants are usually a week or so behind the surrounding areas because we get these cold spring mornings. The lowest in the area was 32 at Frankfort and in Kentucky the coldest was 25 at Black Mountain. In Indiana, the coldest was 25 at Goshen.

.
Sev12 From the SPC here is the severe risk for Friday and for us it is mainly for Friday night. SPC says... ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT IS POSSIBLE ALONG/AHEAD OF SFC COLD FRONT DURING DAY...FROM IL/INDIANA AND PERHAPS SRN LM AREA SWWD ACROSS LOWER MS VALLEY.  STRONGER DEEP-LAYER WINDS SHOULD EXIST OVER NRN
PARTS OF OUTLOOK AREA...WITH LAPSE RATES...LOW LEVEL MOISTURE AND BUOYANCY INCREASING SWD.  DEEP-LAYER SHEAR PROFILES WILL SUPPORT SUPERCELL/TORNADO THREAT WITH ANY RELATIVELY DISCRETE/SUSTAINED CONVECTION...AND DAMAGING WIND THREAT WOULD DOMINATE WITH MORE LINEAR ACTIVITY.  ONE OR TWO RELATIVELY SMALL AREAS OF CONCENTRATED AND/OR SIGNIFICANT SVR POTENTIAL ARE QUITE POSSIBLE WITHIN CURRENT BROAD-BRUSHED CATEGORICAL AREA.  HOWEVER...AFOREMENTIONED UNCERTAINTIES PRECLUDE FOCUSING SUCH PROBABILITIES ON ANY PARTICULAR AREA WITHIN SLGT RISK THIS FAR IN ADVANCE
.    Look for some areas to be put at a 30% risk in the next update tomorrow morning.

Tuesday late evening 4/29

A couple of odds and ends to wrap up today......
Q1 Q2

Christina and Bobbie Jean the first with the earthquake t-shirts...

By the way, no aftershocks for 3 days so maybe things are winding down.

Tree  Thanks to Jo for this pretty picture of a crab apple tree. I think this may have been the best year ever for the blooms. Maybe the temps staying down in March and April is the key for this to happen.

Tuesday evening 4/29

Gr_1_full A Frost ADVISORY is in effect for all of Kentucky to the east of Louisville. Frost is likely in those areas as the core of the cold high pressure sits over eastern KY overnight. Along the I-65 corridor and areas to the west only some patchy frost in low lying areas is expected. No frost is forecast here in the city.

From Portland, OR.... Mother Nature doesn’t seem to realize it’s almost May; the National Weather Service issued yet another snow advisory for the Oregon Cascades with up to 12 inches of snow possible...click  here

Halo A fairly rare full halo around the sun was spotted in Key West, FL today.

Here is a story about how a halo around the sun forms....click here

Surf From Hawaii... Record breaking heat and big waves in Waikiki can only mean one thing, an early summer swell is here. The first big summer waves are on their way to southern shores and visitors and spectators are taking full advantage.... click  here

Corn planting is running behind this spring because of the wet fields...for Kentucky...31% has been planted with 64% the average by this time.
In Indiana, 11% has been planted with 30% usually planted by now.

Gr_8_full The main storm activity is still expected Friday night. As a reinforcing shot of cooler air moves in Saturday afternoon, there could be another broken line of storms to develop. I have our Derby Day rain chances at 30%.

Bedrace Thanks to Kat for this photo of me interviewing the winning Raytheon Bed Race team during the live TV coverage.

Tuesday early afternoon 4/29

Cpc1 The CPC's latest summer temperature outlook has above normal temps out west and in the northeast.

Cfs The CFS has below normal temps in the Ohio Valley and above normal out west and in northern New England.

There are some forecasts that this could be our coolest summer in a number of years where there could be less than 20 days in the 90s. Last summer Louisville had it's hottest month ever. The average high temp during August was over 97 degrees.
